IEP FAQ
Do I need an IEP to homeschool in Ohio?
No, an IEP is not required for homeschooling. However, the IEP is the ticket to both the Jon Peterson and Autism scholarship programs. At School Solutions, we use existing IEP/AEP goals to help target our intervention services specifically to your child's needs.
What happens if the district refuses to test my child?
Districts are required by law to evaluate children suspected of having a disability under 'Child Find.' If they refuse, you have the right to appeal. School Solutions can help you understand the next steps and how to continue providing educational support while you navigate this process.
Who updates the IEP for a homeschooling student?
The student's district of residence updates your student's testing report every 3 years, and updates the student's IEP annually. The IEP renewal meeting is usually done via a virtual meeting, in less than 30 minutes.
Homeschooling FAQ
Can I use the Jon Peterson Scholarship if I am fully homeschooling?
Yes! Both the Jon Peterson Scholarship and the Autism Scholarship are fantastic resource for homeschoolers. School Solutions is a trusted name in the Ohio homeschool community for over 20 years, and we provide online 1:1 intervention services that fit your schedule, and homeschool style.Â
How does School Solutions work with my homeschool schedule?
We pride ourselves on flexibility. We know homeschool styles vary, so we coordinate with you to find session times that don't interfere with homeschooling or other homeschool endeavors. Our tutoring is designed to complement what you are already doing at home, focusing on specific IEP goals that might need more specialized attention.
Will I lose my homeschooling independence if I join the program?
Not at all. The School Solutions owner (Lisa Cox) has been a homeschool advocate for over 20 years and ensures that School Solutions staff acts as your partner in homeschooling. We help with the specialized educational components, but you retain control over the homeschool environment and general curriculum and homeschool style. General Questions
How do I find Jon Peterson scholarship providers?
The Ohio Department of Education maintains a searchable list of approved providers on their website. School Solutions is an approved provider specializing in one-on-one intervention for homeschoolers.
What does the Jon Peterson and Autism Scholarship cover?
The scholarship is designed to pay for the services listed in your child’s IEP, such as specialized tutoring, speech therapy, or behavioral support, provided by approved vendors. It does not cover homeschooling curriculum, sports fees, or general school supplies.Â
What happens if the district refuses to test my child?
If a district denies a request for evaluation, they must provide 'Prior Written Notice' explaining their reasoning. Parents have the right to request an independent educational evaluation (IEE) or seek mediation. It is helpful to provide data or work samples that demonstrate the need for support to bolster your request.
What should I include in my request email for evaluation?
When contacting your local district, keep it simple and formal. State that you are a homeschooling parent requesting an Initial Evaluation for your child. Briefly list your specific concerns—such as reading difficulty or speech patterns—and express your interest in identifying eligibility for an IEP. School Solutions can provide a sample email to the district when requested.Â
Who is responsible for updating the IEP each year?
Your local public school district is legally required to review and update the IEP annually, even for homeschooling students. As the parent, you are a member of the IEP team. School Solutions often assists by providing progress reports that help the district team understand your child's growth and refine their goals for the upcoming year.
